Nintendo Co. Ltd. sold 476,000 units of its new Wii video game console in the United States in November, more than twice the number of PlayStation 3s sold by rival Sony Corp., as the two consoles debuted mid-month, research group NPD said Friday.

Sony's PS3 sales came in at 197,000.

Microsoft Corp. sold 511,000 units of its Xbox 360 in November, according to NPD.

That console, released just over a year ago, is locked in a three-way battle with the PlayStation 3 and Wii, which were released in mid-November amid speculation over whether Sony can maintain its dominance over the global console market after selling more than 106 million PlayStation 2 units globally.

The Japanese electronics maker had said it would ship 400,000 PS3s into the United States for its launch, but there has been broad industry speculation that the company had fallen far short of its initial goal.

According to an article by Asher Moses from the Sydney Morning Herald, Sony Australia's General Manager, Nic Foster, has some slightly poorly-worded opinions on the Nintendo Wii, as compared with the forthcoming (for Aussies) PlayStation 3.

Foster was quoted as saying, "Wii is a core gaming device. It's a more fun, intuitive sort of product to pick up, where the PS3 is a broader entertainment solution; so you can have your fun, enjoyable gaming ... but then you have a whole suite of other applications ... such as Blu-ray media playback, the ability to access your music, access your photos and the interoperability with the PlayStation Portable."

Foster also felt that the console's delay will not affect its overall performance in the Australian market.

The Wii (pronounced as the pronoun "we", IPA: /wiː/) is Nintendo's seventh-generation video game console. Previously known by its project code name of Revolution, it is the successor to the Nintendo GameCube and competes against Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3.

A distinguishing feature of the Wii console is its wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which may be used as a handheld pointing device and can detect motion and rotation in three dimensions. The console also notably features WiiConnect24, which enables it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while consuming very little electrical power.

Nintendo first mentioned the console in the 2004 E3 press conference and later unveiled the system at the 2005 E3. Satoru Iwata revealed a prototype of the controller at the September 2005 Tokyo Game Show.[3] At E3 2006, the Wii console won the Game Critics Awards for Best of Show and Best Hardware.[4] In the December 2006 issue of Popular Science the console was awarded with the Grand Award Winner in Home Entertainment.
